A Letter to My Freshman Self
What I wish I knew before starting college
Dear Freshman Me,
I hope you joined a lot of activities. I hope you took pictures—lots of them. I didn’t have a camera back then, and honestly, I regret that. If only I had one, I’d have so many memories to look back on now.
Sure, I could’ve borrowed a camera… But I wanted one of my own—something that could capture moments I could call mine. Something I could share life with.
If you ever get your hands on a gear like that—something that can expose you to public settings, that can spark conversations with strangers—use it. Don’t be lazy. I know you don't like asking for favors or doing free work, but college is only four years. Make it count.
And as always—don’t give a damn about what people think. If there’s something interesting to share, share it. Be bold. Be enthusiastic. Speak up about the things you care about.
I wish I could’ve lived by myself during college. It would’ve been a great way to practice independence. But rent is expensive, and I needed to be practical. Still, if you ever have the chance to step out on your own—even just a little—take it.
Talk to more people. Ask random questions. Start random conversations. You’ll learn so much more that way.
Travel, even just a bit—especially outside your comfort zone. Join an organization that challenges or inspires you. It’s worth it. If you can, stay closer to campus. It’ll save you time and energy—and give you more space to grow.
Stay grounded. Be kind. Avoid gossip. Minimize any behavior that could hurt others. Sleep early—your mind will thank you later.
And finally… be patient with yourself. You’ll make mistakes. You’ll feel lost sometimes. But you’ll also become someone stronger, more compassionate, and more capable than you realize.
Sincerely,
Your future self 💬
